P1: describe how changes in technology have affected the
gathering and presentation of information in different types of media

Changes in technology have affected the gathering and presentation of information in different types of media as social media can affect people as they can get lots of different information from it and can also broadcast their information to other people. Over the years computers have evolved as the first PC (IBM Compatible) computer was made in 1981, but the first electrical computer and the first mass produced computer was the IBM 701. Over time computers have got better and better and more people are able to use computers. The world wide web was then created in 1989 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, which gave people the power to connect with each other and find out any information they may need. This then links to social networking such as facebook. There are over 845 million people who have an account on facebook, who log in every day to find out the latest information on what their friends are doing and what is happening in the world. Facebook was first launched in february 2004. This has become more popular in the last few years as people use facebook to find out what is happening in their area, socialise with friends by talking to them on facebook chat, update status’ on what they are doing or how they are feeling and keep in touch with friends who are living away. Twitter is another social networking site which was first created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey. It enables people to send and receive text-based posts known as tweets. Twitter also has over 300 million users. This benefits people because celebs as well as non-celebs are able to keep in touch with people who they admire.

P2: outline how the media can affect events as well as report them

Media can affect events as well as report them because if reporters get a hold on a story then they could get the guideline information about the story and then publish a newspaper article or a news report giving a biased opinion on the story or making information up which they are not sure is true. This shows in the case of Stephen Lawrence as the newspapers published how the police believed that his friend was the one who killed Stephen because he was black. This caused anger and upset as the papers were released showing that the blame was going onto Stephens’s friends because the police were racist. This affected the people who knew Stephen and also the police forces reputation. This could also put a negative opinion against Stephens’s friend because if the media are telling the rest of the world his friend has been accused then other people may believe them accusations and start to have a negative affect against him.

M1: analyse how changes in technology affect the gathering and presentation of information in different types of media, and its ability to affect events

Changes in technology can affect the gathering and presentation of information in different types of media, and its ability to affect events as when the media let people know that the police who dealt with the Stephen Lawrence case were institutionalised racists, the members of the public became distressed and disgusted with them. This would then put a negative opinion on the police and people would not respect them. The media then influenced the police to take different action against how they treat victims and they have also changed legislation to have to stick to certain codes of conduct. After the way the two police officers acted towards the Stephen Lawrence case the government have now been given full and unfettered powers to inspect police procedures and services. This will strongly involve unsolved murders and racist incidents. They have to make sure race relations legislation should apply to all police officers. The Association of Chief Police Officers will devise new guidelines for reviews of investigations. They have to review their judicial system which includes thing such as any evidence of racist motivation to be declared at all stages of the prosecution. No exclusions on the grounds of plea-bargaining, Consideration of a change in the law that would allow prosecution of racist offences that took place other than in public and Consideration of a change in the law that would allow prosecution of racist offences that took place other than in public. They have had to review their police procedures like having to give first aid to someone while a paramedic arrives and All proven "racist words or acts" should lead to disciplinary proceedings, and such behavior should normally be punishable by dismissal. They have to make sure that they have a record if they stop and search someone with a copy and they have to annually publish reports on the progress of police authority. These have all been put in place in order to change the way the police work in investigations so they have improved the way they control the investigations and recently they have managed to reopen the case of Stephen Lawrence and they have managed to trial 2 of the men who killed Stephen and convicted them of murder and they are currently serving a prison sentence.
